What is Dependent Child Sponsorship?
Dependent Child Sponsorship, part of Family Class Sponsorship, serves to reunite family members living in different countries by allowing them to move together into Canada. Through this program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents may sponsor their foreign-born children for permanent residency status in Canada.
Eligibility Requirement
Eligibility Requirements to Sponsor Your Child in Canada To become eligible as a sponsor for your child’s relocation to Canada, they must:
- 18 or over and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in Canada or intending to return there; or registered under the Indian Act of Canada.
- You should demonstrate your ability to provide for yourself, dependent children and possibly spouse.
Establish the legitimacy of your relationship with your child. Have no criminal history. - Not be currently incarcerated, charged with serious offenses, bankrupt, in default of previous sponsorship undertakings, or under immigration investigation.
As long as there is no disability involved, an income assistance is not appropriate.
Are Your Children Eligible for Sponsorship?
Children eligible for sponsorship must meet certain criteria related to being dependents, including being:
Dependents include biological and adopted children of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are unmarried or not living together, under 22 years old and eligible as dependents under certain criteria (for instance: they don’t work full-time and qualify as “dependents”). Under certain circumstances children over 22 can also qualify as dependents – provided two conditions are met:
Individuals living with physical or mental illnesses that preclude self-sufficiency depend on their parents for financial support before turning 22 years old.

- Step 1: Access an application package on the government website, consisting of a guide with instructions and all required forms.
- Step 2: Pay the online application fee which covers processing, Right of Permanent Residence Fee, biometrics and any third-party charges applicable.
- Step 3: Submit your application according to the instructions outlined in your guidebook.
- Step 4: As directed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), submit any supporting documents required.
Does Quebec Have Its Own Immigration Processes?
Yes. Quebec’s unique immigration procedures necessitate additional steps for residents.
In Quebec, applications must be filed with both Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and with the Ministere de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Integration (MIFI).
Quebec applicants must first apply for and sign an “undertaking” with the province in order to become sponsors, with this undertaking promising that you will fulfill basic needs of their sponsored person as well as potentially reimburse them for any social assistance provided during this sponsorship period. Its duration varies depending on their age.
